"
A Good Race" (Part 4)

 by Don Emmitte

It is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a very special place in my heart. We have shared together the blessings of God, both when I was in prison and when I was out, defending the truth and telling others the Good News. (Philippians 1:7 NLT).

Paul had an investment in the life of the Philippians. It was right that he care about their spiritual well being. Other people have an investment in you! It is right that they care for your spiritual growth.

There are so many who have had such a wonderful influence in my life. Perhaps none were as significant as Bailey Stone. He was the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas when I made my commitment to Christ and was baptized. I remember one moment in particular. It was just minutes prior to my first public sermon. Bailey had asked me to preach in his absence on a Wednesday evening. I had prepared for weeks, but was understandably nervous. Just prior to going in to the sanctuary, which was very full for a mid-week service, I was handed a telegram. I still have it these many years later. It was a simple note: “Read Dt. 31:6. I am praying for you. Bailey” In case you are wondering about that reference in Scripture, it is “Do not fear them, not be in dread of them. It is the Lord your God who goes before you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.” Great advice to a young preacher before his first sermon! Even today, 36 years later, he continues to encourage me with short notes via email. They mean the world to me.

Who is the person or persons that if you were to think back have had the biggest impact on your spiritual life? Maybe there was a pastor who first told you about Christ. Perhaps it was a mother or father who never gave up on you, but instead continued to pray for you. Is your spouse the person who has most encouraged you spiritually? Has there been a stronger Christian who has helped to encourage your spiritual growth? Take some time today and encourage that person. Send them a note or email. Handwritten notes are much appreciated these days. Give them the encouragement they may need to keep encouraging others. Tell someone today that you are thankful for their investment in your life!

Who knows? That may be just the encouragement someone will need to help them take the next step in their continued journey. Life does indeed come at us very fast. To run the race well, we all need help. Be an encouragement to those who have encouraged you by saying thanks!
