"Mighty Is Our God" (Part 1)

 by Don Emmitte

As Pharaoh and his army approached, the people of Israel could see them in the distance, marching toward them. The people began to panic, and they cried out to the LORD for help. Then they turned against Moses and complained, "Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren't there enough graves for us in Egypt? Why did you make us leave? Didn't we tell you to leave us alone while we were still in Egypt? Our Egyptian slavery was far better than dying out here in the wilderness!" But Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch the LORD rescue you. The Egyptians that you see today will never be seen again. The LORD himself will fight for you. You won't have to lift a finger in your defense!" (Exodus 14:10-14 NLT).

Do the pressures of life and the strength of your adversaries overwhelm you feeling? You know that God wins all battles, but do you feel hesitant, as you face this latest one? Do you wonder if maybe this time, God will finally lose a battle? The Scriptures contain story after story, of the mighty works, performed by our mighty God. The Scripture is full of the history of God’s revelation and intervention, throughout human history. Consolation and hope fills each and every page. In the next few days I hope you will take the time to really reflect on these awesome deeds of God.

In our text this morning, the fuller context is the exodus of Israel from their slavery in Egypt. The impossible occurred. Just when it looked like Pharaoh threw a knock out punch, to God’s plans to rescue them, God released the Tenth Plague. Pharaoh was no match for the checkmate of God. Consequently, Pharaoh released the Jews. Shortly after the release of the Jews, Pharaoh and his men regretted their decision. After all, who would do the menial work, now that the Jews were gone? They pursued God’s people, to the edge of the Red Sea. Here, God worked another mighty miracle.

Pharaoh and his men approached on one side and the Red Sea remained on the other. Escape? Where were they to go? Was this desert land to be their burial ground so soon? But when it seemed impossible, God would make a way. “Do not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. The Lord will fight for you,” declared Moses. God parted the waters and opened a dry path for His people. God made a way where there was no way.

What in your life, today, stares at you with the same impossibility as this water? God parted the waters and the Israelites walked through, dry and safe. Ask Him, right now, to part the waters of impossibility, allow you to cross over, and leave your enemies behind.
