"Well-Watered"

 by Don Emmitte

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with scoffers. But they delight in doing everything the LORD wants; day and night they think about his law. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper. (Psalm 1:1-3 NLT).

We have just had the grass replanted in our back yard. Even though the weather is not as hot here as it is in Texas, the new grass will need to be well watered to survive. There’s nothing like green grass in the summer, plush and thick. The appearance of it is an invitation to come, sit, and rest awhile! In contrast, the dead brown grass simply repulses me. It’s dry, brittle and downright ugly.

This contrast reminded me of Psalm 1. This Bible verse speaks of a well-watered tree. When the roots have received the water they require, the branches thrive. Likewise for grass, well-watered roots make for lush, green blades of grass. Comparing the two areas showed how completely opposite they were. One was enticing, and one was repelling.

God gives us a desire to have well-watered roots, even if we don't acknowledge it. There is a desire to sink our spiritual roots deep into His truths, and God tells us the method by which to do this. Staying in God’s Word, reading and mediating His Truths, praying with Him, and being in fellowship with a community of believers will water our spiritual life. People have no desire to become dry, brittle and unappealing, but it can happen to us if we omit the spiritual watering process in our lives. Let’s stay green, plush and inviting to others….maybe they will want to dwell with us in an appealing and comfortable place, which is His presence

How about you? Are you planted where you can be well watered? If not, you may uproot yourself and change locations. Go where you can find God on a daily basis. Meditate regularly in the Scripture. You will find it a much better place to live your life!
