"Without Fear" (Part 3)

 by Don Emmitte

My child, don't lose sight of good planning and insight. Hang on to them, for they fill you with life and bring you honor and respect. They keep you safe on your way and keep your feet from stumbling. You can lie down without fear and enjoy pleasant dreams. You need not be afraid of disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, for the LORD is your security He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap. (Proverbs 3:21-26 NLT).

The Book of Proverbs was given to us as a source of wisdom. These proverbs are not necessarily promises from God, but principles about God. In other words, this is not a promise that you will always lie down and have sweet dreams, but most of us already know that. We’ve probably lost sleep many nights because of our fears.

What this is saying is that there is a principle in God’s economy about trusting in Him. The more we trust Him, the less we will need to fear and the more pleasant our life will be. With every principle, there is a condition to that principle. What is the condition here? That our security be the LORD!

Think with me for a moment about your own life. What do you really trust? Consider how you would complete this sentence: the foundation of my trust is _______________. Are you trusting in your bank account, your doctor, your human relationships, your health, your ability to work? If your answer is anything other than the person of Jesus Christ, you are going to have struggles in the area of trust, because anything else will disappoint you.

I started this series because of some fears in my own life, so this series really may only be for me. Just before the final deadline for the finalization of our move from Weatherford, TX to Apex, NC, with still no resolution in sight I found myself fearful. I had done everything according to what I believed was God’s plan for our lives, yet nothing seemed to be falling into place. With mere minutes to go before the deadline, I walked outside and began to think and pray. Finally, I concluded that whatever happened next in our lives it would be all right. God was in control. I walked into the building and got the call that all was taken care of! Funny how well God works under pressure!

Even if this series is just for me, my prayer is that it will touch your life as well! Would you like to join me in trying to replace every other trust in our lives with Jesus? Lord; help us to learn to trust you more!
