"The Woman at the Well" (Part 12)

 by Don Emmitte

"Sir," the woman said, "you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?" Jesus replied, "Believe me; the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father here or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know so little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. However, the time is coming and is already here when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for anyone who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth." The woman said, "I know the Messiah will come--the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then Jesus told her, "I am the Messiah!" (John 4:19-26 NLT).

God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and commanded him to lead God’s people out of Egypt. Moses, a self-proclaimed weak talker, questioned God. Moses asked God, “Who should I say sent me?” God simply replied, “I AM who I AM.” You fill in the blanks, because “I AM”. “I AM” the Rock. “I AM” the Living Water”. “I AM” the Bright and Morning Star. “I AM” the Alpha and the Omega. “I AM” the Lord God Almighty; Provider, Creator and All-Sufficient King. God’s answer to Moses was that He is God! No other answer was necessary.

When Jesus met the Samaritan woman, a woman with great sin and great need of redemption, Jesus restates the same truth to her that God had to Moses. “The One you see is He.” “Your Savior has arrived.” “I’m the One!” “I’m all you need!” Jesus declares Himself sufficient for all the needs of the Samaritan woman. Her search can end; Jesus is more than enough!

Can you imagine waiting all your life for something and finally there it is, right before you? It must have been almost too good to be true. The fact is salvation is that way. Throughout Scripture, men and women were amazed that God would love them and care for them. When we consider His eternal glory and power, it doesn’t make sense that He would bother to care for us, and yet He does, beyond our ability to comprehend.

When you find Jesus, you have found your answer. You don’t’ have to look any further. Jesus is sufficient. HE IS IT!

Over the last few months, I have come to understand another part of this truth. Not only is Jesus more than enough, He has a plan so much better for you than you could design. I will be talking a little more about that in the coming days, however, for now; it must all begin with trust that Jesus is the One! Is he the one in your life? Take care before you answer too quickly. If he is the one in your life, it will require walking a path that does not always appear “logical.” In fact, there will be times when you simply have to take a step at a time! It will be worth it. Trust Him!
