Healing for a Broken Heart”
by Don Emmitte

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, because the LORD has appointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD's favor has come, and with it, the day of God's anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, praise instead of despair. For the LORD has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory. (Isaiah 61:1-3 NLT).

Most books and stories have a happy ending. Predictably, the good guy always wins in the end! There is one notable exception to that, the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. Let me refresh your memory:

"Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again."

We live in a world of Humpty Dumpty people. People who are broken inside - where it's hard to heal. You might be one of them. The pain and hurt and disappointment of your life have left you shattered. And though there have been attempts to put the pieces together, nothing has really worked. The shattered dreams and hopes remain. For them, there is no "and they lived happily ever after."

Our reading today offers some real hope for a happy ending. The prophet is speaking of Jesus. The Bible says that part of Jesus’ mission on earth is to put together broken people. Maybe all the king's horses and all the king's men can't put you together again. But the King can. If you'll give Him all the pieces of your life - no matter how hurtful, no matter how shameful, no matter how ugly. Jesus can do what no friend can do for you, no lover, no therapist, no medication, no family member, and no emotional anesthetic.

Please don’t misunderstand me to mean that all of these remedies are not helpful, they are just temporary. The only eternal fix is found in Jesus. When sin entered the world so did the potential for our hurts and pain. The only answer for that problem is found in the death of Jesus. He is the only Savior. He is the only source of power to overcome the work of Satan in the world. I have found that very few people “fall off the wall” on their own; most are pushed by the devil either working in their lives or the lives of others. That’s the source of our brokenness. Jesus has the solution at that level!

Perhaps no one else has been able to put together all your broken pieces. Turn to Jesus. That’s why He came. He is your wonderful hope of a happy ending. Turn to Him today and see if your life doesn’t begin to come together.
