Lagniappe
by Don Emmitte

In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He was in the beginning with God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. God sent John the Baptist to tell everyone about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was only a witness to the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world. But although the world was made through him, the world didn't recognize him when he came. Even in his own land and among his own people, he was not accepted. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan--this rebirth comes from God. (John 1:1-13 NLV).

There is a word used primarily in Louisiana that has great meaning spiritually. It is “lagniappe” (pronounced lan-yap). Lagniappe is a word that means, "gift, or an extra amount." It is something given which is over and above what one is due. Some stores tuck a small gift in with your purchase. When you buy a dozen of an item, some businesses will give you a "baker's dozen," or thirteen. It is a serendipitous little experience when lagniappe comes your way. It is not something you earn or buy and, of course, you don't have to accept the free "extra amount.” I can’t imagine anyone refusing it. It is good public relations for the business that shows this kind of generosity.

Lagniappe is like the grace of God. This grace that God gives is much more than "lagniappe" since it is in such great abundance. There is more than enough grace available to cover all the sins of all people who have ever lived. In fact, one of God's names is "El Shaddai," which means, "the God who is more than enough."

Although, like lagniappe, grace is a free gift to those who will receive it, it cost Him greatly. The price was paid for us by the death (crucifixion), burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God's Son, 2,000 years ago. Its efficacy is still in effect today. This is the meaning in our reading today.

We sing a wonderful old hymn that says, "...Grace, grace, God's grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Grace, grace, God's grace, grace that is greater than all our sin." No one has to live under condemnation any longer. However, tragically, there are those who have refused to recognize and accept God’s gift of grace. It is foolish to decline a “lagniappe” and offends the giver. How much more foolish is it to refuse the gift of God? And, how much more must He be offended at the refusal? Accept His grace today and enjoy the benefits of new birth!
