Are You Thirsty?"

by Don Emmitte

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a beautiful bride prepared for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "Look, the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the old world and its evils are gone forever." And the one sitting on the throne said, "Look, I am making all things new!" And then he said to me, "Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true." And he also said, "It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give the springs of the water of life without charge! All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. (Revelation 21:1-7 NLV).

Water is essential to life. Here in this country, at least, there is an abundance of water. In fact, nearly two-thirds of the earth is covered by it. Yet in the rest of the universe, it is one of the rarest of the rare elements. We look out the windows in the morning and overnight it has formed on the grass. Some days, we look out the windows and it is falling from the sky. In the winter, it freezes and accumulates in drifts. We turn on a tap and there it is.

Water has a high specific heat. This means that the chemical reactions in the human body will be kept rather stable. If water had a lower specific heat, the water in our bodies would boil with the least amount of activity. If it was higher, we could not keep our body temperature at the 98 degrees needed to survive. We need water just as God created it or life would be impossible. The ocean modulated Earth’s surface, and kept within certain limits, we would either be cooked to death or frozen to death. Just as the water we drink is the body's thermostat, the ocean is the Earth’s. It takes a large loss of heat for water to pass from liquid to ice, and for water to become steam a large increase of energy is required. Hence, the water is an insulator against the heat of the sun and the freezing of winter. Unless the ocean modulated the temperature of the earth’s surface, and kept within certain limits, we would either be cooked to death or frozen to death. Who balanced that all out? How did this design come about? I believe this is proof of another miracle of the creation. The earth itself screams design. If it were any smaller, then the atmosphere would be impossible. Any larger and the atmosphere would contain free hydrogen like Jupiter and Saturn. Either way, life could not be sustained. The distance from the sun is absolutely correct. A small change would make the earth either too hot or too cold. Just a small tilt of the earth's axis ensures us of the seasons, helping spread water to nearly all parts of the earth.

Jesus referred to His Truth as "...springs of living water." Just as we thirst for water, we thirst also for Truth and the salvation that comes with it. All we need do is accept what is offered. His gift will forever quench your thirst, and that gift will sustain you in this life and through all eternity with Him. Just a simple prayer… are you thirsty?
