"Space Cowboys"

Home

With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:6-8 NIV).

Some of you are not old enough to remember seeing the movie Space Cowboys except in the reruns on some of the classic movie channels of cable TV! However, I saw it again the other day and it made me think of a very important principle. The movie revolves around a retired aerospace engineer who is called upon to rescue a failing satellite. He insists that his equally old teammates accompany him into space. The engineer is played by Clint Eastwood and his teammates are played by Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner, and Donald Sutherland. They all have astronautical training, but never made it into space. The day finally arrives and they are about to blast off in the space shuttle as James Garner, who is now a minister, is called on to pray. He says, “Dear God, don’t let us mess up!” And everyone answers a hearty “Amen!”

In our reading today the prophet Micah is asking a series of rhetorical questions, each seeking the same response to the question: what can you give God? What can you give to the one who has it all? What can you give to the one who created the Heavens and the Earth? What can you give to the giver of all good things? The answer is pretty short: nothing! You can give God nothing He can't create for Himself, but God has made out for you His wish list. And what is it that the Lord requires? First, act justly. Do what is right! Read the Scripture and discover His desire for your life. Learn the commands of Jesus: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself. Be fair to your fellow man. Be a man or woman of integrity.

Second, love mercy. Love the mercy that God has given you and love to give mercy. No doubt you will be wronged many times this year; in the supermarket, at the red light, in the workplace, in your home, and even in the church. Forgive others just as you, yourself, have been forgiven. Give mercy to the degree that it has been given to you, and believe me, that is a lot of mercy!

Finally, walk humbly with your God. If you will look at Genesis 3:8, God had a habit of walking with Adam and Eve. Sin separated them from that immediate, close relationship with the Father. Jesus made a way to restore that relationship at the cross. Humble yourself today and allow Him to walk with you again! He has told you what is good. I like that prayer… Dear God, don’t let us mess up! And, He even tells us how!
