"Black Ice (Part 5)"

Home

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32 NIV).

Spiritual discernment is God’s antidote or first line of defense against deception. The Word and Spirit of God discern the thoughts and intentions of our hearts and give us the ability to discern, the ability to make proper distinctions. Spiritual discernment presupposes proper motives. The motive for true discernment is never self-promotion or personal gain. Discernment has one primary function: to distinguish between right and wrong so that we may pursue the right and avoid the wrong. It is more a function of the Holy Spirit bearing witness to our spirit than it is of the human mind. Our union with God makes spiritual discernment possible through the process of illumination. This is the impact of Jesus’ teaching in our reading today. The light of God’s truth is the only valid weapon against the darkness of deception. Here are some practical steps to insure that you are protected:

§  First, believe God wants you to know. He wants His people free! It is a sad truth that so many people feel as if the knowledge of God and the experience of His Spirit are somehow restricted to the elite in God’s family. While we all are given different gifts none of us is superior to another. In fact we are essential to one another. God wants you to know everything necessary for protection against Satan and the ultimate victory and possession of abundant life!

§  Second, be willing to do His will in advance of knowing it. This one is a little harder for most of us. We like to see what’s ahead. Sometimes that’s not in our best interest. God knows that and asks us to trust Him. Satan knows this weakness and whispers in our ear that God is withholding something from us and how could we trust someone like that? Well, you can. It is the essence of faith. Just like my grandchildren take a running start to leap into my arms when they see me, trusting that I will gather them to my chest and lift them high, so we can run to our Father knowing He will not let us fall. Take the step!

§  Third, believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and our final authority. It contains science, history, and much more, but do not fall for the lie that it must be answer every science and historical question raised. It answers EVERY life question you may raise. Believe it! Practice the promises!

§  Fourth, be diligent is studying God’s Word with a humble, teachable attitude. You do not need a seminary degree to study and understand the Scripture. You need a willing attitude. Read it! You won’t be disappointed!

You don’t need to worry about the “Black Ice”! The Apostle John gives us this encouraging reminder in 1 John 4:4-6: You... are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. Live free!
