God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power. He directs the snow to fall on the earth and tells the rain to pour down. Then everyone stops working so they can watch his power. The wild animals take cover and stay inside their dens. The stormy wind comes from its chamber, and the driving winds bring the cold. God’s breath sends the ice, freezing wide expanses of water. He loads the clouds with moisture, and they flash with his lightning. The clouds churn about at his direction. They do whatever he commands throughout the earth. He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love. Pay attention to this, Job. Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God! (Job 37:6-14 NLT).
On Wednesday of Passion Week the Scripture is silent as to the activities of Jesus. I can easily imagine that he spent the day in the quiet solitude of the mountains or in the solemn company of a few friends. It has been a whirlwind up to this point and undoubtedly he knew he needed to refresh both his body and spirit for what lay ahead.
I can also imagine that he might have turned his mind to the truth within our reading today as he meditated in prayer. The King James Version is probably a little more recognizable to you as the Lord instructs Job to “stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God” (verse 14).
Having begun my counseling ministry again, I am remembering how fraught with anxiety and concern most of us are at any given moment. This instruction to Job is a clear reminder to us to open a window of peace on to our world. Jesus was facing the most trying of times. He looked toward his imminent torture and execution, yet he could face it with peace and courage. It was because he knew that his Father would not leave him alone. So it is for you. Use this thought as you approach Easter and remember that even though Friday was a dark day, Sunday was coming. So it is for us!
However dark your days are, never forget that the promise of an eternal light is yours through Christ. Turn your thoughts to Him… there is the hope that can never be turned away! |
