"Hard as a Rock"

Home

Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. (Isaiah 50:7 NIV).

There are those times when we need to examine the actual words of a passage to really understand the truth. Today's reading is one of those for me. The word “flint” is not one which is commonly used. Wikipedia describes flint as a hard, quartz like substance, often used to start fires. Further, it is sturdy, rigid, not easily destroyed. I suppose we could say that it is “hard as a rock.”

You and I, the children of God, do not have to act like the rest of the world. The world changes with the trends of the day. If it is popular, then the world wants to be a part of it. If tolerance is the buzz word, then tolerance it is, according to the world.

Within the life of the Christian, we can set our heart like flint on the principles of God. Fear is not our motivator; neither is lust or greed. We don't have to worry about the stock market collapsing or global warming burning up our planet. That doesn't mean we shouldn't work to keep those bad things from happening in our world, just that we shouldn't worry about them while we are working on them. Our future is secured, not by the leaders of our nations, but by the power of our heavenly Father.

If you know Christ, then set your face like flint! Keep focused on the Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ! Set your heart on things above and all this world will take care of itself. You are one of the redeemed, chosen before the Creation of the world to inherit the Kingdom which will never fail! Trust in God today to be your guide.
