“No Time”

Home

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:1-4,12 NIV).

Have you seen the television commercial for Visa Check Card? There have been several of them circulating in the past few months. One that I recently saw involved a couple entering a theater with just seconds remaining until the start of the movie. They had to pay for their snacks and make it to their movie in less than a minute. The man reaches for his wallet and fumbles for the money, wasting “valuable” time, when the woman with him takes out her check card and swipes it in the debit machine immediately releasing them to make their mad dash arriving at the last moment before the door closes to their movie.

The thought is that when you’re in a hurry, there’s nothing as quick and easy as the check card. All of that may be true. I am certainly not endorsing or opposing the use of a debit card instead of cash! However, there is something underlying this scene that has permeated our culture. We are all in way too much of a rush! I believe God would have us all slow down a bit. Use our time wisely in the pursuit of wisdom.

I wonder how much time you have spent gaining wisdom? Are the things you involve yourself with producing a heart of wisdom? Or, are you wasting it? You may say that you only have a minute or two to spare as it is… someone has said, “More time is wasted not in hours but in minutes. A bucket with a small hole in the bottom gets just as empty as a bucket that is deliberately kicked over.”

Don’t misunderstand. I am not advocating that every moment be spent in some direct religious activity. There are many things we can do with our time that will bring wisdom. For example, how about trying a nice quiet walk through the neighborhood just before sunset? Or, how about taking an extra five minutes every day to read to your child? Why not take a moment each day to write a note of appreciation to someone who has touched your life? There are so many things we could do if we simply would slow down a bit and do them. Redeem the time… you will gain a heart of wisdom when you do!
